Chapter 2 of the Piano For All piano lessons method focuses on Blues and Rock and Roll.  This chapter/lesson was relatively short, but quite deep in terms of material.  Before one is done with this online piano lesson, you will have learned no less than 5 different, standard blues and rock rhythms.

As with the first lesson, the emphasis here is on getting you PLAYING piano right away.  The music theory is kept to a minimum so that you are not bored or bogged down with learning, when you could be PLAYING!  And I mean “play” in every sense of the word, this is a fun lesson!  A few of the songs you will be able to play and imitate after working on the exercises contained: Great Balls of Fire, Blueberry Hill, Get Back, Honkey Tonk Woman, Jailhouse Rock, and many many more.  This really is the backbone you need to learn how to play blues and rock piano.  You are going to want to pull out your boombox and play along with these hits right at your keyboard . . .

While I do have some experience in playing blues and rock piano, I still picked up a few tidbits by reading the lesson and watching the videos.  Frankly, when I was teaching myself how to play blues piano twenty years ago it would have been nice to have had access to such a simple, easy to use, easy to learn method.

After doing a fair amount of research I settled on a program called “Piano For All”.

First, let me explain why I chose this program in particular.  It was important to me that there be both books, as well as audio and video to help me learn at my own pace.  Piano For All seemed to have all these attributes on their sales page, so I thought I would give it a shot.

Getting the product was very easy.  I was provided with a download page and several options on how to download (you can download one large file or several smaller files).  You also have an option at purchase to get physical books, but I figured I would be OK since I can just carry my laptop in to the piano room.

So, even though I know a little bit about playing piano I figured I would start my piano classes online by simply starting at the beginning .  I was interested in not only improving my own play, but also reviewing the methodology of the piano classes for others to see.

I was really struck by the simple way in which Piano For All approaches teaching piano.  It does away with the boring and traditional “Every Good Boy Does Fine” stuff, and you dive right in and start to play.  It works more visually and by ear, which will get you playing immediately rather than spending a bunch of time memorizing stuff.

I think this is one of the great things about this piano books for beginners is that it DOES get to the theory, but not until you are already playing some music!  This way is WAY more fun, and frankly you have a better understanding of the theory by DOING rather than just learning.

I will say this, there is an emphasis on pop, rock styles in book one.  This blog post is just a review of the first book, and that would be my only criticism so far.  If you are a complete beginner and hoping to learn classical music, so far there is not much emphasis on that.  However, I do like the technique that it uses to get you started QUICKLY and you DO end up learning some theory, which of course can be applied to classical music on your own.

Overall, a great package so far!  You will be playing recognizable pop songs in no time.

Probably like you (if you found this site) I had an interest in learning how to play piano, but rarely have the time or a consistent enough schedule tht I could commit to taking in person lessons.  So, I began to look into online piano books, piano classes for beginners and other ways to learn piano online.

I DID manage to find some great resources for online piano basics, as well as a whole host of resources to learn piano online.
